The Pedagogical Institute focuses on the development of all levels of education and its main activities centre on in-service training of teachers, educational research, educational documentation and educational technology. The in-service training offers continuous professional development programs for teachers at all levels of education.
The Pedagogical Institute was founded in 1972, according to a proposal by the Ministry of Education of Cyprus and a subsequent decision of the Ministerial Council of Cyprus. It began functioning in 1973. It reports directly to the Director General of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
The three departments of the Pedagogical Institute are the following:
- The Department of Educational Training
The in-service training offers continuous professional development programs for teachers at all levels of education. It offers compulsory in-service as well as optional courses. The Training Programmes for the Newly-Promoted School Principals and Deputy Heads is an example of compulsory programmes which are offered by the Department of Educational Training at The Pedagogical Institute.
- The Department of Educational Documentation contributes to the developmental role of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute. Emphasis is given to reliable and contemporary sources with the continuous enrichment of the Library of the Institute. Since May 2002 the unified Curriculum Development Unit was officially integrated with the PI.
- The Department of Educational Technology is active in: a) in-service training for teachers in the use of Information and Communication Technologies, b) technological support for the running programs of the Pedagogical Institute, c) production and dissemination of multimedia material, d) promotion of projects in using ICT in education.
