Centre for Principal Development, UMEÅ University

The Centre for Principal Development was established in January 1993. One significant mission and responsibility for the Centre is to RUN the National head Teachers training Programme for Northern Sweden and also other parts depending on the demand for training. A range of academic courses which can contribute in the training and development of both current and future leaders within the school sector is a vital parts of the activities at the Centre. The Centre also gives Masters and Ph.D. – courses in governess, leadership and administration. One other important goal for the Centre is that research should be and form an essential part of the Centre’s work. Consequently, Centre staff are currently involved in different substantial comparative research projects:

  1. International Superintendents Research Network (ISRN)
    The purpose of ISRN is to convene researchers in a global effort to study the district school superintendent. The ISRN supports scholarly research that ranges from comprehensive studies that are national in scale to those that have more specific foci. ISRN utilizes technology to share research designs, methods and instruments, increase accessibility research findings, and to facilitate communication and collaboration among scholars.
  2. National Policy meets local implementation structures
    The research problem deals with what happens when national educational policies meet structures of implementation at the municipality level. One focus in that work is to increase the knowledge about what we here call the superintendent, their Institutions, Professional Work and Competence Development.
  3. International Successful School Principalship Project (ISSPP)
    When we started the International Successful School Principalship Project (ISSPP) in 2001 we were interested in finding answers to the question: What contributes to school principals’ success in leading schools so that students gain the most from their experience of school education? Teams of researchers from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, England, Canada, the United States, Australia and China participated and found a series of answers and arguments as the results from analyzing a range of documentary, quantitative and qualitative data from approximately 30 schools. Five years later on we went back to those schools which were led by the same principals in order to find out whether the success had been sustained and if so, how .
